Specialty sutures
A specialty suture adds a feature to an established suture polymer — an antibacterial coating, or a barbed knotless design — for procedures with a particular requirement. The base material, and how it behaves in tissue, stays familiar.
Antibacterial (triclosan-coated) sutures
Antibacterial sutures carry a triclosan coating on an established suture material such as Polyglactin 910, Polydioxanone or Poliglecaprone 25.
The coating is intended to inhibit bacterial colonisation of the suture itself. Because the base polymer is unchanged, the strength retention and absorption behaviour the surgeon already knows carries over — the antibacterial option sits inside a familiar material rather than beside it.
They are offered in both braided and monofilament absorbable constructions.
Barbed knotless sutures
The other specialty family is barbed: tiny barbs cut along a monofilament let the suture anchor in tissue without surgical knots. We offer barbed sutures in absorbable polydioxanone and non-absorbable polypropylene, including a barbed device that also carries a triclosan coating.
Choosing a specialty suture
Selection depends on the procedure and the feature required — an antibacterial coating, a knotless barbed design, or both — as well as the base material and its absorption behaviour. Final selection rests with the operating surgeon.
